Understanding IP Whitelisting
1. What is IP Whitelisting?
IP whitelisting is when specific IP addresses (unique identifiers for devices on a network) are added
to a list of “allowed” addresses. This ensures that only these trusted devices can connect to or
access your systems.
2. When is IP Whitelisting Needed?
IP whitelisting is needed when Pro-Vigil servers and services, located outside of your network, need
access through your network’s firewall to function/interface properly with the Pro-Vigil equipment
located at your site. Without it, crucial/critical connectivity can't be obtained and will result in Pro-Vigil
equipment on site being unable to work as intended.
3. Why is This the Customer’s Responsibility?
We do not have access to your router or firewall configuration, as this is part of your private network
setup. Your assistance is required to make these changes to ensure your security system functions
as intended.
4. Where Can I Find These Settings to Whitelist IPs?
IP whitelisting settings are typically found in your network equipment’s firewall configuration. This
is usually accessible through:
- Your router’s or firewall’s web interface (e.g., by logging into the admin portal).
- Your network’s security or management dashboard, if you have one.
- The documentation or support resources from your internet service provider or network
equipment manufacturer.
5. Who Should You Contact to Whitelist Our IPs?
If you’re unsure how to whitelist IPs, you can:
- Reach out to your 3rd party IT service provider (if you use one).
- Contact your IT manager or system administrator if you have in-house IT staff.
- Ask whoever manages your site’s internet (e.g., internet service provider or on-site
network manager).
